We are filmmakers, freshwater explorers, and global leaders in the use of underwater drones to create extraordinary images for science and cinema.
Located on the shores of Lake Huron in Ontario, Canada, filmmakers and freshwater explorers Yvonne Drebert and Zach Melnick are the founders of Inspired Planet Productions and Fellows of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. For more than two decades, the husband-and-wife team have been shining the spotlight on Canadian nature, history and science stories, creating more than 40 hours of broadcast documentary, earning them three Canadian Screen Award nominations.
Lately they have shifted their lens underwater, partnering with Boxfish Robotics to bring their LUNA class ROV to Canada for the first time, allowing them to create cinematic imagery down to 500 meters (1,600 feet) deep. They have learned to “swim with the fishes”, using advanced underwater robotics and a custom-designed Henley landing craft to uncover never-before-seen freshwater worlds and wildlife behaviours for storytelling and science. They filmed the first known scientific documentation of Lake Whitefish spawning, and discovered the Africa, a 19th-century Lake Huron shipwreck. Their current project is Hidden Below: The Great Lakes, a wildlife documentary about underwater life in the Great Lakes for TVO. They have also partnered with PBS Detroit to bring the underwater exploration experience to audiences in real time with Hidden Below LIVE streaming events.
